
Mars Hill's comeback bid falls short in five-set battle with Newberry
The Mars Hill volleyball team (17-8, 12-5 SAC) was defeated in five sets (25-22, 10-25, 19-25, 25-22, 10-15) by Newberry (14-13, 8-9 SAC) Tuesday evening.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (17-8, 12-5 SAC) was defeated in five sets (25-22, 10-25, 19-25, 25-22, 10-15) by Newberry (14-13, 8-9 SAC) Tuesday evening.
Newberry rallied late in the fifth to secure the win, closing out the contest on their 10th ace of the night off the hand of Avery Webb. The Wolves recorded seven kills in the fifth.
Tied at 15 in the first set the Lions reeled off three straight points to a build a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the set, closing out the set on a 5-2 run.
The Wolves tied the match up in the second set, dominating the Lions 25-10. The Wolves amassed 17 kills and hit .517 in the set. They carried their offensive prowess over into the third, knocking down 15 kills and hitting .115, holding the Lions to a -.021 hitting percentage.
Mars Hill rallied late in the fourth set with three straight blocks from the duo of Jana Cuk and Emma Vacha followed by three errors from the Wolves to tie the match at two sets apiece.
Newberry hit .135 to the Lions .029, racking up 65 kills. Samantha Shaffer led all players with 17 kills followed by Katie Ullsperger's 14 and Jacquelyn Adams' 13 on the night. Avery Webb led all players with 30 assists while Olivia Bradley recorded 29 digs. Baylor Herlehy posted 11 blocks (4 BS, 7 BA).
The Lions were led by Jada Cannon's 12 kills. Jordan Schmucker collected 25 assists and 24 digs while Laela Jimenez added 22 digs. Cuk also ended the night with 11 blocks (4 BS, 7 BA), a new career-high.
Mars Hill wraps up the regular season on the road when they face Limestone on Friday, November 4. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
