Pioneers eclipse 300 treys in a season, fall 81-64 at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. --- The Anderson University men's basketball team placed five players in double figures to lead the Trojans to an 81-64 win over Tusculum Wednesday night at the Abney Athletic Center in South Atlantic Conference action.

Anderson (10-17, 8-11 SAC) records its third win in a row and completes the season sweep over the Pioneers (6-20, 4-15).

AU's Rakish Taylor and Randall Shaw scored 17 points each, while Christian Jeffords added 14 including his four 3-pointers.

Tusculum was led by junior Donovan Donaldson's 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.  Freshmen Dashaunte Smith and Zailan Peeler added 10 points apiece while rookie Elon Smallwood finished with nine markers off the bench.

The Trojans went on an 11-0 run in the first period to pace the home team to a 46-32 halftime lead.  Shaw came off the bench to post 13 points in the first half, while Taylor tallied 10 points and eight rebounds at the intermission.

Anderson scored the first six points of the second half to take a 52-32 advantage and later but the game out of reach with an 18-2 spurt to go up 70-38 with 10:39 remaining in the contest.

The short-handed Pioneers didn't give up as they outscored the Trojans by a 21-8 margin in the final 10 minutes.

Anderson shot 31-of-62 from the floor including 15-of-27 (56%) in the second half. The Trojans outscored Tusculum 38-20 in the paint and out-rebounded the Pioneers 41-36.  AU also made 10 of its 11 free throws (90.9%) while the Tusculum went 9-of-14 (64.3%) at the charity stripe.

Tusculum junior Zach Hartle finished with eight points and four rebounds as he buried two of the Pioneers' 11 treys on the evening.

The Pioneers continue to add on to their single-season record as they became the first team in school history to eclipse 300 three-pointers made in a year.  TC has made 304 this season, 14 more than the previous mark of 290 established by the 1995-1996 squad.

Tusculum will close out the season on Saturday as the Pioneers travel to Newberry for a 4 p.m. tip-off.  TC defeated the Wolves 99-87 last month in Greeneville.
