Cobras Open SAC Tournament with Win Over Anderson; Take on Eagles on Friday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team improved to 38-15 on the season, picking up a 6-1 win over the Anderson University Trojans on day one (Apr. 27) of the South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship Tournament. 

Cacey Simmons got the Cobras started on the right foot in the bottom of the first inning, blasting a solo home run to right field, putting Coker ahead 1-0. A Kelsi Bachmann walk with the bases loaded plated another run in the second inning, giving Coker a 2-0 lead. The Navy and Gold stayed red hot at the plate, with Tayler Barcomb belting a two-run home run to left field and lifting the Cobras ahead 4-0. Anderson responded with a run in the top of the fourth inning, however, a solo home run by Barcomb and a RBI single by Simmons plated a pair of insurance runs, securing the eventual 6-1 win for the Cobras.

Three Cobras had multi-hit games, led by the 3-for-4 performance by Barcomb. She also plated three RBI and scored two runs. Mindy North was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Simmons was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

In the circle, Taylor Forehand allowed just one run in 4.1 innings. She improved to 13-2 on the season. Nikki Linthicum picked up her fifth save of the season, issuing just one walk in 2.2 innings of work.

The Cobras will square off with the No. 1 seed Carson-Newman University at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
