
Mars Hill splits with LMU
The Mars Hill softball team (12-15, 4-8 SAC) split with Lincoln Memorial (20-13, 6-4 SAC), taking game one by a score of 5-2, but dropping game two by a score of 7-5.
HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill softball team (12-15, 4-8 SAC) split with Lincoln Memorial (20-13, 6-4 SAC), taking game one by a score of 5-2, but dropping game two by a score of 7-5.
GAME ONE: MHU 5, LMU 2
Farley Park's grand slam in the top of the sixth propelled the Lions to a game one victory over the Railsplitters.
Lincoln Memorial plated two in the bottom of the frame, breaking the shutout bid. McKenzie Henry's solo shot put LMU on the board. Later in the inning, a Mars Hill error allowed the Railsplitters to tack on their second run.
After four scoreless innings, Mars Hill opened the scoring with a RBI single from Kristyn Ezzo, plating Park.
Park led all players with two hits and four RBI. Alyssa Poston earned the win, allowing one earned run off of three hits while striking out eight in the complete game.
GAME TWO: LMU 7, MHU 5
The Railsplitters used a three-run third inning to help lead them to a game-two victory, earning the split on the day.
Tied at three entering the bottom of the third, Victoria Conley's two-run single broke the tie. Madison Henry's sacrifice fly capped off the scoring in the stanza.
Alyssa Poston's RBI single in the top of the fourth brought the lead back down to two, but the Railsplitters responded in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single from Katy Pozzuto.
In the top of the fifth, Ella Brooks once again pulled the Lions within two with a solo home run.
Katie Todd's RBI groundout in the first opened the scoring. Katie Tuggle's RBI double to left tied the game in the first while Pozzuto's RBI single provided the 2-1 lead entering the second.
Poston gave the Lions their second lead of the game with a two-run single to center field in the top of the second, scoring Farley Park and Maia Sholter. Henry's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second tied the game at three.
Pozzuto and Anna Kate Reichter led all players with three hits. Poston led the Lions with two hits and three RBI. Brooks also recorded two hits.
Hayley Tamaro picked up the win, allowing three earned runs off of eight hits in the complete game.
Mars Hill returns home on Saturday, March 18 when they host Lenoir-Rhyne. First pitch at Ponder Field is set for 1 p.m.
