
Lions open 2022 season on road versus Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. - The Mars Hill softball team (0-2) opened their 2022 season on the road versus Emory & Henry (2-0), falling in both contests by scores of 8-0 and 6-5, respectively.
GAME ONE - EHC 8, MHU 0
The Wasps took game one by a score of 8-0 to open their season.
Morgan Silvis opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. Anna Thomas, in the bottom of the second, plated two more runs with a single through the left side of the infield that scored Amanda Koeppe and Mackenzie Williams.
Following a bases loaded walk that plated the Wasps' fifth run, Lydia Taylor's two-run single put the Wasps up by seven. Emily Scaggs' RBI single in the bottom of the sixth ended the game early and gave the Wasps their first win of the season.
Taylor led Emory & Henry with two hits and two RBI. Alicia Wittenhagen and Zoie Pistel led the Lions with two hits.
Avery Adkins picked up the win, allowing seven hits and striking out three. Kayla Gallagher was credited with the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits and seven walks.
GAME TWO: EHC 6, MHU 5
The Wasps rallied in the bottom of the sixth and capped off their comeback in the bottom of the seventh to sweep the day.
Trailing 5-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, Lydia Taylor's three-run home run tied the game at five. In the bottom of the seventh, Anna Thomas walked it off with a RBI single to center field, plating Nicole Cox.
The Lions opened the scoring in the top of the second as Marissa Adame hit a two-run home run. In the top of the third, Alicia Wittenhagen's RBI single to center scored Micki Maxson to put Mars Hill up by three.
Taylor hit her first home run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, a two-run shot to center field. In the top of the fifth, the Lions plated two more runs, highlighted by Farley Park's RBI single to center and followed up by Alyssa Christopher's sacrifice fly later in the frame that plated Park.
Adame led the Lions offensively with two hits and two RBI followed by Wittenhagen's two hits. Taylor led all players with two hits and five RBI.
Avery Adkins earned her second win of the day, throwing one scoreless inning, allowing one hit, and striking out three. Adame suffered the loss, allowing six runs (four earned), on seven hits in 6.1 innings pitched. She struck out eight.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Friday, February 11 when they open up the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic. They face Lander at 12 p.m. followed by Erskine at 2:30 p.m.
