Bumgarner's late home run downs Lander
Lions strike in bottom of eighth to win in non-conference play.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (10-22) defeated Lander (21-10) by a score of 6-5 Tuesday afternoon at Henderson Field in non-conference play.
Tied at five entering the bottom of the eighth, Terick Bumgarner's solo shot over the left field fence proved to be the game-winning swing, giving the Lions their third and final lead of the game.
Mars Hill trailed 2-0 after the first inning. Late in the second, Zachary Cimino gave the Lions their first lead of the game with a three-run home run.
Following scoreless third and fourth innings, the Bearcats retook the lead by plating two runs in the top of the fifth. Elec Yount's RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame tied the game at four.
Jackson Jones gave the Lions a one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single up the middle, plating Chapel Matson, but Lander responded in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Garrett Chun.
Bumgarner led all players with three hits while Cimino led all players with three RBI.
David Ziolkowski threw 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out three in the start. Seth Coxie threw two scoreless innings, striking out two to earn his second win of the season.
Mars Hill returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Friday, March 28 when they host Limestone. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 2 p.m.
