Mars Hill downed by YHC
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill baseball team came out strong against Young Harris on Tuesday afternoon at Henderson Field, taking an early lead in the first inning, but a mid-game offensive push by the Mountain Lions proved to be the difference as the visitors secured a 9-2 victory.
The Lions (5-15) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on back-to-back singles from Elec Yount and Walker Fox, followed by a Carter Potts base hit to load the bases. Peyton Starkey drove in the first run on a groundout, and a wild pitch allowed another to cross the plate, giving Mars Hill a 2-0 advantage.
Young Harris (13-6) responded in the fourth inning, putting together a three-run frame to take the lead. Mars Hill kept things tight before the Mountain Lions put together a five-run sixth inning, using a combination of timely hits and aggressive baserunning to extend their lead.
Despite the final score, Mars Hill saw several bright spots, including Blake Russell's 2-for-2 performance with a double and a stolen base. Chapel Matson also doubled in the ninth, trying to spark a late rally. The Lions' pitching staff battled throughout, with Dustin Dunlap making the start and Owen Bynum, Christian Galindo, and David Ziolkowski contributing in relief.
For Young Harris, Kade Smallwood (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and Carlos Martans (2-for-4, 2 RBI) led the offense, while their pitching staff settled in after the first inning to hold Mars Hill scoreless the rest of the way.
With the non-conference game behind them, the Lions now turn their attention back to South Atlantic Conference play, hosting Wingate for a crucial three-game series this weekend. The series begins Friday afternoon at Henderson Field, followed by a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch Friday is set for 2 p.m.
