Montgomery’s hat trick leads Bulldogs into SAC semifinals

Box Score

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University freshman forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) notched a hat trick in her first career postseason appearance to lead the second-seeded Bulldogs past the number seven seed Catawba College Indians 4-1 in quarterfinal action of the 2011 Food Lion SAC women’s soccer tournament Wednesday night. The Bulldogs improve to 14-3 overall, advancing to Friday’s semifinals. Catawba falls to 6-11 on the season.

The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the board, scoring 3:20 into the first half. Senior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) ripped a shot past the Catawba goalkeeper that hit the post. The rebound went to Montgomery, who netted her first goal of the night and eighth of the season to make it 1-0.

That would be all of the scoring in the opening half. The ‘Dogs led 1-0 at intermission, holding a 10-1 advantage in shots and 6-0 edge in shots on goals.

The Bulldogs took a two-goal lead 19 minutes into the second half, when a through ball from senior defender Stefanie Schroeder (Dallas, Texas) was touched by sophomore forward Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) right to Montgomery, who netted her second goal of the night to make it 2-0.

The ‘Dogs struck again four minutes later, when Adams sent a cross from the right corner into the box. Junior Izabella Miranda (Plymouth, Mass.) was there to finish, scoring her third goal in as many games for the Bulldogs, pushing the led to three.

Wingate added another goal three minutes later, when Miranda found Montgomery behind the defense. She ripped home her third goal of the night, securing her first collegiate hat trick and scoring her team-best 10th goal of the year to make it 4-0.

Catawba avoided the shutout by scoring with 2:34 remaining. A shot from junior forward Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, Alberta) was saved, but sophomore forward Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario) was there for the rebound, netting her fourth goal of the year to cut the deficit to three.

Wingate out-shot Catawba 19-8 on the night, holding a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had three saves for the Bulldogs. Senior Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, Mass.) piled up six saves for the Indians.

The Bulldogs will face Newberry College Friday night in the SAC tournament semifinals. The third-seeded Wolves defeated sixth-seeded Lincoln Memorial 4-0 earlier Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs defeated Newberry 4-0 in the regular season meeting. The winner of that contest will advance to the championship match Sunday at 4 p.m. The semifinals and finals will take place at Manchester Meadows in Rock Hill, S.C.
