GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Mars Hill softball team (14-22, 4-12 SAC) was swept by Tusculum (20-17, 10-6 SAC) by scores of 8-0 and 9-1 Saturday afternoon on the road.
GAME ONE: TU 8, MHU 0 - 5 Innings
The Pioneers held the Mars Hill offense to just one hit in the game one victory.
Tusculum's Gabi Nicholson opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a RBI single to center. In the second, the Pioneers tacked on three runs, highlighted by Claire Smeltzer's RBI double.
After adding two more runs in the third, Smeltzer increased the Pioneers' lead to eight with a two-run double down the left field line, capping off the run-rule victory.
Payton Little recorded the lone Mars Hill hit in the contest.
GAME TWO: TU 9, MHU 1 - 6 Innings
A five-run sixth inning by Tusculum closed out the Saturday sweep.
Leading 4-1 after five, a pair of home runs along with a two-run double in the sixth provided Tusculum the eight-run advantage.
The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth where Tusculum plated three, highlighted by Sammy Jimenez's solo home run. Mars Hill's Payton Little broke the shutout bid in the top of the fifth with a RBI double that plated Leah Grimes.
Maia Sholter and Jessica Senn led the Lions with two hits apiece in the contest.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Saturday, April 13 when they host Wingate at Ponder Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
