Lions down Cavaliers in 2019 finale
The Mars Hill baseball team (19-26) closed out the 2019 season with a 9-3 win over UVa-Wise (21-21) Tuesday morning in non-conference action.

WISE, Va. - The Mars Hill baseball team (19-26) closed out the 2019 season with a 9-3 win over UVa-Wise (21-21) Tuesday morning in non-conference action.
The Lions, entering the third up 1-0, extended their lead with one swing of the bat. With the bases loaded, Gray McCurry blasted a grand slam to left center to put Mars Hill up 5-0 after three.
Dawson Cagle put the Cavaliers on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI groundout, but in the top of the fifth, with the bases loaded, Mars Hill reestablished their five-run advantage as Hunter Holland drew a walk, plating Scottie Lee.
UVa-Wise scored twice in the seventh to cut the lead down to three, however, the Lions responded in the top of the eighth. Daniel Vitello hit launched a two-run home run and in the top of the ninth, Lee added a solo home run to put the Lions up 9-3 in the final frame.
Matthew Church led all players with two hits on the day. The Lions had four hits on the day, three of which were home runs.
Zach Grice started the contest for Mars Hill, allowing one run on one hit while striking out eight in four innings pitched. Ryan Steffens was credited with the win, allowing two runs on two hits in three innings pitched.
