HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
The nationally ranked Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead to start the night, and would move in front 9-3 a few moments later to prompt a Limestone timeout. The Saints ran off four straight points, getting blocks from Rohrer and junior
Vanessa Blas (Concord, N.C.) on back-to-back plays, to climb within 9-7.
That proved to be the closest the score would get in the opening set as Wingate tallied nine of the next 10 points to push the advantage to 17-8 in the late going. Williams would get a pair of kills for the Blue and Gold down the stretch, but the Bulldogs would take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 set win.
Second Set
Williams and Rohrer each recorded a kill early in the second as Limestone and Wingate split the first four points of the set. The Bulldogs would then use a 6-1 run to open up an 8-3 edge, but kills from Bergan and Williams would keep the Saints within striking distance early on as they closed the gap to 9-6.
The home team pulled away with four consecutive points, making it a 13-6 contest midway through the frame, but a spike from Rohrer capped a 2-0 spurt for the Blue and Gold. It was all Wingate from that point forward as it used a 12-3 stretch to take a commanding 2-0 match cushion with a 25-11 win.
Third Set
Looking to close things out in straight sets, Wingate jumped out to a 2-0 edge before Blas got the Saints on the board with a kill. However, the Bulldogs surged ahead with a 10-3 spurt over the next several minutes as the regional powerhouse built up a 12-4 lead at the midway point of the frame.
Sophomore
Madyson Lousignont (Las Vegas, Nev.) gave Limestone two quick points on a kill followed by a service ace. Bowen added two kills for the Saints in the third set, but Wingate was just too strong as it closed out the 3-0 match sweep by winning seven of the final eight points of the set for a 25-12 decision.
TURNING POINT
Limestone stayed within striking distance with the regional power early in each frame, but Wingate would use long runs to take control of all three sets and win each with a double-digit margin.
NOTABLES
- The Saints finished with a -.065 hitting percentage, ending up with more errors than kills
