Lions grind out 10-9 win over E&H
Brooklyn Nemitz nets hat-trick in Lions' first SAC win of season.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (2-6, 1-3 SAC) put together a strong all-around performance to secure a hard-fought 10-9 victory over Emory & Henry (2-5, 0-4 SAC) on Wednesday evening.
Mars Hill set the tone early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter behind goals from Brooklyn Nemitz and Nevaeh Louden. Nemitz, who was a force on offense, finished the game with a hat-trick and the crucial final goal to seal the win.
Emory & Henry battled back throughout the game, tying the score multiple times. A goal by Justyce Jones early in the third quarter gave Emory & Henry a brief 5-4 lead, but Mars Hill responded quickly with goals from Haley Stallings and Kendall Middleton to reclaim momentum.
Nemitz struck again in the fourth quarter to give Mars Hill a two-goal cushion, but Emory & Henry refused to go away, cutting the lead to 9-8 with just over nine minutes remaining. Moments later, Nemitz tallied her third goal of the game, giving Mars Hill the breathing room needed to close out the victory.
Mars Hill outshot Emory & Henry 28-14, with 18 shots on goal compared to Emory & Henry's nine. The Lions also controlled the ground ball game, collecting 36 to Emory & Henry's 21, a crucial factor in securing possession throughout the game. Standout performers included Nemitz, who led with three goals, Stallings with two goals and an assist, and Madison Welch, who contributed two assists. Victoria Kaercher played a key role in goal, logging 50:51 minutes in the net.
With the win, Mars Hill builds momentum heading into their next challenge—a road matchup at Coker on Sunday at 3 p.m.
