#13 Pioneers rally for 5-4 win over #37 Queens to stay unbeaten

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum women's tennis team remained undefeated with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Queens in South Atlantic Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The 13th-ranked Pioneers (17-0, 7-0 SAC) won the final three singles matches against the 37th-ranked Royals (10-3, 6-2 SAC) to stay perfect on the season. Angelica De Vincenzis won the clinching match for the Pioneers with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Isabel Fornies at flight five.

Tusculum trailed 2-1 after doubles, with the only point coming at flight three as Africa Mota and Amber Lackey defeated Carolina Nielsen and Ana Bolson 8-3.

In the first half of singles play, the Pioneers went to three sets in two of the three matches, winning at flight three as 68th-ranked Annie McCullough defeated Sasha Davidzenka 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. Caitlin McCullough began the comeback for the Pioneers with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Nielsen at flight four, and Mota tied the match at 4-4 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Bolson at flight six.

After dropping the first set but coming back to win the second set, De Vincenzis trailed Fornies 3-0 in the third set. After winning the next three games to even the set at 3-3, De Vincenzis fell behind 4-3 but then won three in a row to clinch the victory for the Pioneers.

Tusculum will face their second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent on Monday as the Pioneers visit 21st-ranked Wingate for an 11 a.m. match. The Bulldogs have won 66 consecutive conference regular-season matches since losing to the Pioneers in 2012.
