#9 Women’s Soccer’s comeback bid falls short in NCAA Tournament Third Round

Melbourne, Fla. —- The 9th-ranked and second-seeded Catawba College women's soccer team scored twice in a five-minute span, but the comeback bid ran out of time, as the Catawba Indians fell to 6th-ranked and top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne in the NCAA Tournament Third Round from Rick Stottler Field in Melbourne, Fla.

 

TEAM STATS

- Lenoir-Rhyne out-shot Catawba 9-8

- The Bears held a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on goal

- LR had two of three saves in the match

- Catawba was called for 15 of 19 fouls in the contest

- The Catawba Indians took six corner kicks to Lenoir-Rhyne's four

- Both teams were called for offside twice

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Helen Summerell scored a goal on a team-high two shots on goal

- Morgan Delair also netted a score off the bench

- All-region performers Hannah Dunn and Alexah Fite provided assists on the goals

- Bree Ehmer recorded the other shot on goal for Catawba

- Ashley Hughes made one save in goal; Gabby Cossette provided relief in net

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST HALF

- Evan O'Leary provided the first shot on goal for Lenoir-Rhyne four minutes in, but the attempt was saved by Hughes

- Neve Duston scored on an O'Leary assist to put the Bears on top in the ninth minute

- Summerell's try for goal was saved by LR's S.A. Phillips

- Elin Hansson netted the Bears' second goal on assists from Anna Schuller and Duston in the 19th minute

- LR struck for its third score in the 26th minute off a score from Ria Acton, assisted by Duston

- Ehmer tried for a Catawba score, but the attempt was saved once again by Phillips

 

SECOND HALF

- A foul in the box allowed Acton to score from the penalty spot, as Lenoir-Rhyne led 4-0 in the 64th minute

- Delair got Catawba on the board in the 73rd minute off of a Dunn assist

- Summerell got the Catawba Indians even closer with another score in the 78th minute on a Fite assist

- The LR defense tightened up from there, as neither side got a shot on goal for the remaining 12 minutes, as the Bears advanced to the national quarterfinal

 

NOTES

- Catawba set a program record with 19 wins this season

- The Catawba Indians scored in every game this year, scoring 71 goals on the year to finish one goal shy of the single-season program record

- Catawba reached No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches poll for the first time in program history this season, becoming the first team in Catawba College athletics history to earn the No. 1 ranking in their respective poll

- The team's 14-game win streak to start the season also set a program record
