Griffor's Big Day Not Enough Versus Patriots

FLORENCE, S.C. - Senior Phill Griffor recorded six hits over two games, however the Coker University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday (Mar. 13) to Francis Marion by scores of 8-3 and 6-2.

The Cobras jumped out to an early lead in game one behind singles from Phill Griffor and Kody Hanna to put runners on, then an RBI single from Brady Jeffcoat gave Coker the 1-0 advantage. The Patriots went on to put up four unanswered runs, making the score 4-1 through four innings.

In the top of the fifth, Reilly Hall led off with a walk, Phill Griffor doubled, and Ashby Vining got the RBI when he reached on a throwing error to trim the lead to 4-2. The Cobras added one more in the sixth on Griffor's RBI double to score Cory Listing, but the Patriots would hold on to win game one 8-3. Griffor's four hits paced the Cobras in game one and freshman Andrew Scudder recorded his first career multi-hit game, as he reached on two singles. Matt Hyatt provided two scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen in the losing effort.

In game two, Francis Marion took the early 2-0 lead but the Cobras struck back in the top of the third, as Reilly Hall, Phill Griffor, and Kody Hanna strung together back-to-back-to-back two out singles to draw within one run at 2-1. The Coker bats were held in check until the top of the seventh inning when Scudder led off with a double, then scored on Griffor's RBI single. The Patriots were too much on the afternoon and took the second half of the double dip by a 6-2 scoreline.

Phill Griffor once again led the way offensively as recorded two hits and one RBI. Reilly Hall and Kody Hanna both registered two hits each and Hanna drove in the other Cobra run. Freshmen Cooper Thomas and Britton Adams both threw 1 ⅓ scoreless innings in relief out of the Coker pen.

The Cobras will attempt to return to the win column this Tuesday (Mar. 15) when they travel to Aiken, S.C. to take on the Pacers of the University of South Carolina at Aiken. First pitch is scheduled for 4pm, with live video and statistics available at www.cokercobras.com
