Baseball Splits with Regionally-Ranked Carson-Newman

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker University baseball team split its South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against regionally-ranked Carson-Newman, taking game one 5-4 and dropping game two 10-0. 

 

Game One

 

Carson-Newman would take a 1-0 lead in the first from a sacrifice fly. 

 

Coker would tie it up in the fourth from Jackson Williams's RBI hit to left, scoring Drew Klaserner

 

Coker's go-ahead run would come off the bat of Phill Griffor. Griffor would send a double to left center, scoring Bryan Castillo to put the Cobras up 2-1 in the fifth. 

 

In the sixth, Kody Hanna would send a two-run bomb over the right center wall, scoring Jackson Williams to put Coker ahead 4-1. 

 

The Eagles would tie it up in the top of the seventh at four all headed to the bottom of the seventh. 

 

Coker would get the walk-off win from Klaserner's bases-loaded RBI walk that plated Lake Lybrand, bringing the final game score to 5-4.

 

Defensively, Coker threw a combined no-hitter until the seventh inning. Garrett Dunn allowed no hits and struck out three over 4.0 innings of work. Griffin Hollifield (3-3) picked up the win for the Cobras. 

 

Game Two 

 

Carson-Newman's offense would bounce back in game two. Scoring four runs in the first and five runs in the second to take the 9-0 lead early on. 

 

The Cobra defense wouldn't allow the Eagles to score again until the seventh, when they would score their final run. 

 

Coker is back in action next Thursday (Apr. 22) when they travel to Kodak, Tenn. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Live Coverage can be found at www.cokercobras.com
