Newberry collects 19-8 victory over Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry College remained undefeated in the South Atlantic Conference with a 19-8 victory over Tusculum University in women's lacrosse Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

Emma Jobs had six goals and Trysten Burns and Lana Howell each scored three times for the Wolves (6-1, 3-0 SAC), who outshot the Pioneers by a 38-24 margin in the match. Dakota Beasley, Amelia Hawkes and Scythe Shephard each had a pair of goals for Newberry in the victory.

Cassidy Bourne led the Pioneers (4-3, 1-1 SAC) with three goals, with two goals and an assist from Jessie Carolin-Vandenberg. Elisha Stack scored two goals and Sophia Didzbalis added a goal for the Pioneers.

Stack scored twice in the first quarter for the Pioneers, sandwiching three goals from the Wolves as Newberry took a 3-2 lead after one period. The Wolves scored five straight to go up 9-3 late in the second quarter, but Bourne scored twice in the final 1:05 to pull the Pioneers within 9-5 at intermission.

Newberry scored all three goals in the third quarter to build a 12-5 lead before Carolin-Vandenberg ended the Tusculum drought with 13:48 remaining. Carolin-Vandenberg and Didzbalis scored back-to-back midway through the fourth quarter to cut the Wolves' lead to 15-8, but Newberry closed the match with four goals in the final five minutes.

Mya Halladay had six draw controls for the Pioneers, while Kayla Nuccio led the Pioneers with three ground balls. Penelope Lee added two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers for Tusculum. Newberry received three ground balls from Skylar Duval-Lewis and three draw controls apiece from Jobs, Beasley and Shephard.

The Wolves finished 18-for-21 on clears and had 15 turnovers, while the Pioneers were 13-for-18 on clears and turned the ball over 17 times. Newberry finished with slim advantages in both ground balls (17-15) and draw controls (15-14), while the Wolves were 5-for-9 on free-position shots and the Pioneers 0-for-4.

Emily White had eight saves in goal for the Pioneers, while for Newberry starter Mackenzie Dorr had six saves in 52 1/2 minutes and Presley Green made two stops in the final 7 1/2 minutes.

The Pioneers visit Limestone for a 4 p.m. match on Wednesday, March 12. The 22nd-ranked Saints (5-3, 3-0 SAC) fell 10-9 in overtime to visiting Slippery Rock on Saturday, snapping a three-match winning streak.
