
Martins sets school record in match versus Wingate
The Mars Hill volleyball team (19-10, 7-8 SAC) was defeated in four sets (21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 22-25) versus Wingate (19-3, 12-3 SAC) Friday night on the road.
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (19-10, 7-8 SAC) was defeated in four sets (21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 22-25) versus Wingate (19-3, 12-3 SAC) Friday night on the road.
Senior libero Ully Martins established a new Mars Hill record for career digs. She entered Friday night's match needing just seven digs to surpass Maggie Murphy's 2258 racked up from 2010-13. Martins led the Lions with 19 digs on the night and added six assists.
Both teams hit exceptionally well in the first set with Wingate knocking down 19 kills on 37 attempts, hitting .432 while the Lions hit .300, recording 12 kills on 30 attempts.
Mars Hill erased a six-point deficit in the middle of the frame to win the second set 25-23 off of Martins' lone kill. In the third, Wingate trailed 12-11, but went on a 6-0 run to change the momentum. The Lions battled late, but were unable to complete the comeback, dropping the third.
An early timeout by Wingate in the fourth, trailing 4-1, sparked a 5-0 run that put the Bulldogs atop for the remainder of the contest. Mars Hill found themselves behind 22-14 before scoring eight of the next nine points to bring the set to within one before Wingate closed out the match on back-to-back points.
