Cobras Split Day Two of SAC Championship; Take on Wolves on Saturday

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team went 1-1 on day two of the South Atlantic Conference Softball Championship Tournament, advancing to day three of the event. In their opening game on Saturday, Coker fell to Carson-Newman by a score of 11-3. After dropping to the bottom half of the bracket, Coker rebounded with an 8-1 win over Tusculum in the nightcap on day two.

Home runs by Augusta Jackson and Maria Williamson highlighted the Coker offensively in game one, however, four multi-run innings by Carson-Newman would give the Eagles the win by a score of 11-3.

Williamson and Jackson each went 1-for-2, while Tayler Barcomb had the lone multi-hit game for the Cobras.

Taylor Forehand was hit with the loss in game one. She allowed one earned run in two innings.

In game two, Coker plated four runs in the third inning, highlighted by three base hits. Cacey Simmons scored Riley Morris on a bunt single, then scored, along with Kelsi Bachmann on a two-RBI double by Tayler Barcomb. The inning was capped off when Lilli Otten plated Barcomb with an RBI single to center. The bats for the Navy and Gold were not done there, as Simmons drilled a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to give the Cobras a 7-0 lead. Tusculum responded with a run in the fifth to close the gap to 7-1. Simmons completed her breakout day in the seventh inning with a RBI single, giving the Cobras an 8-1 lead and the eventual seven-run win.

Simmons led the way, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Williamson, Otten and Morris all have multi-hit games as well.

Christine Carver improved to 7-4 on the season. She allowed one run on two hits, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

The Cobras will be back in action tomorrow (Apr. 29) to take on Newberry in an elimination game. First pitch is set for noon at Byerly Park.
