
Lions split day one of Hawk's Classic
The Lions softball team traveled to Murfreesboro to compete in the “Hawk’s Classic Annual Softball Tournament” this weekend, and split their day one contests against Chowan and Frostburg State.
MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Lions softball team traveled to Murfreesboro to compete in the "Hawk's Classic Annual Softball Tournament" this weekend, and split their day one contests against Chowan and Frostburg State.
Game One vs. Chowan
The Lions (3-9) played Chowan (2-13) on Friday morning and won by a score of 6-4.
After jumping out to an early lead due to a two-RBI single from shortstop Farley Park in the top of the third, Chowan would bounce back and rally to score four runs through the next two innings of play. Down one run heading into the final inning, the Lions were able to plate three in the top half of the seventh, thanks to a Zoie Pistel RBI single and a Chowan error to come away with the victory.
Marrissa Adame (1-4) pitched a complete game for the Lions, striking out five, earning herself her first win on the season. Chowan's Megan Vincent threw all seven innings, allowing seven hits and striking out nine, and was given the loss.
Game Two vs. Frostburg State
The Lions (3-9) fell to Frostburg (1-4) by a score of 6-3 in game two of the day.
The Lions found themselves in a four-run deficit against Frostburg State after two and a half innings of play, but would respond by stringing together three runs through the next two innings of play.
Farley Park's RBI single in the bottom of the third put the Lions on the board, followed by a Maegan Blair single in the bottom of the fifth that scored Park and Miranda Marks.
Kayla Gallagher (1-5) started the game for the Lions, throwing three innings and striking out five, and was given the loss. Frostburg State's Sydney Theobald threw 4.2 innings and was awarded the win, while Katie Chapple came on in relief to earn herself the save.
The Lions close out the Hawk's Classic on Sunday, February 27 with game one at 12 p.m. versus Frostburg State followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch versus Chowan.
