
Mars Hill sweeps midweek series with Belmont Abbey
The Mars Hill softball team (8-9) defeated Belmont Abbey (3-6) by scores of 5-1 and 7-3 Wednesday afternoon to sweep the day.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (8-9) defeated Belmont Abbey (3-6) by scores of 5-1 and 7-3 Wednesday afternoon to sweep the day.
GAME ONE: MHU 5, BAC 1
The Lions took game one by a score of 5-1 to kickoff the Wednesday afternoon doubleheader.
After a scoreless first inning, Micki Maxson opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with a two-run single to right field.
In the third inning, the Lions added three more runs to their total. Farley Park plated two with a single to center, scoring Jessica Senn and Alyssa Poston. Later in the frame, Amber McLaren drove in Miranda Marks, putting the Lions up five.
Mackenzie Allison broke the shutout bid in the top of the fourth with a solo home run to left.
Allison led all players with three hits while the duo of Park and Maxson led all players with two RBI apiece. McLaren and Maia Sholter led the Lions with two hits apiece.
Poston struck out five, allowing one run on five hits in the complete game victory.
GAME TWO: MHU 7, BAC 3
The Lions used a six-run fourth inning to secure the sweep, downing Belmont Abbey 7-3 in game two.
Tied at one after three innings, Abby Gatch's three-run home run to left began the Lions' six-run inning. Later in the frame, a pair of RBI singles from Alyssa Poston and Miranda Marks upped the Lions lead to five. With the bases loaded, an errant pitch hit Amber McLaren, scoring Farley Park for the Lions' seventh run.
In the top of the seventh, Belmont Abbey's Alannah Brown hit a two-run home run to pull within four.
Mackenzie Sprinkle opened the scoring with a RBI single to center in the top of the third. Mars Hill answered back in the bottom of the stanza as Marks' single to center plated Ella Brooks.
Brooks, Poston, Marks, and Park each recorded two hits for the Lions while Gatch led all players with three RBI.
Kayla Gallagher picked up her third win of the season, allowing two earned runs on eight hits while striking out three in seven innings.
Mars Hill jumps back to South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, March 4 when they travel to face Emory & Henry. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
