HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

The Saints got a break to start the game as the Indians muffed the opening kickoff out of bounds at their own 5-yard line. After the defense got the visitors off the field, Patton busted loose for a 48-yard run on first down before Phillips capped the drive with a three-yard TD run on 4th-and 3 to make it 7-0 early.

Limestone forced a three-and-out on defense on Catawba's next possession, and the Saints capitalized with another scoring drive as Phillips found Scott down the visiting sideline for a 37-yard catch-and-run. Phillips hit Scott for an 18-yard completion earlier on the TD drive as the home team went up 14-0.

The defense continued to shine as Frederick made a highlight-reel play for his second interception of the year, stepping in front of the receiver at the Catawba 45. The Blue and Gold scored three plays later to make it 21-0 as Morton finished off the drive when he found Dukes open in the back of the end zone.

The Indians got on the board late in the opening quarter as a 42-yard field goal capped a 7-play, 54-yard drive. However, a 59-yard return on the ensuing kickoff by junior Shanard Bain (Spartanburg, S.C.) helped stake the Saints to a 28-3 lead as Patton scored from 10 yards out to close an explosive quarter.

Second Quarter

Catawba found some rhythm on the offensive side of the ball to start the second, cutting the deficit to 28-10 as quarterback Kendall Davis scored from eight yards away early in the frame. Following a block on Limestone's 48-yard field goal attempt, the Indians climbed even closer, 28-17, with a 24-yard TD pass.

The Saints promptly responded as Patton hauled in an 18-yard catch while rushing for 31 yards to move the ball to the 10-yard line. Morton tried to get the ball out to the sideline on a first-and-goal but Catawba's Brenden Westbrook stepped in front and took it 85-yards to close the gap to 28-24 with 3:24 remaining.

With its lead cut to four points, Limestone calmly responded as Brooks tallied 37 all-purposed yards while freshman Caden Peeler (Boiling Springs, S.C.) pulled down an 11-yard reception. Phillips then scrambled for 17 yards before Scott made a tremendous one-handed grab in the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown.

Third Quarter

Both teams exchanged possessions to start the second half before the Saints used a long 15-play, 93-yard drive that chewed 7:21 off the clock. Phillips found Scott for a 22-yard gain on a 2nd-and-22 early in the drive before the duo hooked up for the third time on the day – a 26-yard score to make it 42-24.

Fourth Quarter

Limestone used another time-consuming drive in the fourth following an interception by Ogletree and an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Indians. The Blue and Gold ran 6:24 off the clock and worked its way down to the Catawba 1 before junior kicker Thomas Cook (Moore, S.C.) nailed a 24-yard field goal.

A few plays later, Ogletree came up with his second pick of the quarter after Davis was hit in the pocket by senior DL Christian Shupe (Hull, Ga.). The Saints put the contest well out of reach, 52-24, a few plays later when Phillips found Perry down the middle for an 18-yard touchdown strike with 3:46 remaining.

TURNING POINT

Limestone took control on the first play from scrimmage as Patton's 48-yard run set the stage for the Blue and Gold. The Saints scored touchdowns on all four possessions in the first quarter, and then held off a charge by Catawba in the second before pulling away with 24 unanswered points over the final 30:13.
