
Mars Hill holds off GCSU to kickoff weekend slate
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - The Mars Hill softball team (4-1) defeated Georgia College and State University (1-4) by a score of 2-1 Friday evening.
The contest was scoreless until the top of the third where the Lions broke through. With runners on first and third, Sydney Hodges reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Daci Sarver to score the first run of the game.
In the top of the sixth, Sarver plated Katie Todd with a sacrifice fly to center field to double the Lions' lead heading into the final inning.
The Bobcats' Kam Caldwell broke up Mars Hill's shutout bid with a RBI single, but the Lions' defense persisted for the remainder of the contest, picking up their fourth win of the season.
Sarver and Maia Sholter picked up both Lions' hits on the evening. The Bobcats committed four errors, but outhit Mars Hill 6-2 with Kacie Wiggins leading all player with two hits; a double and a triple.
Téa Cornett earned her third win of the season, allowing one run on six hits while striking out four in the complete game victory.
The Lions take on both Middle Georgia and Georgia College and State on Saturday, February 8. The first game is set for 1 p.m. while game two between the Lions and Bobcats is set for 6 p.m.
