Burroughs Goes Yard Twice, but Saints Drop Series to Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – Sophomore Clark Burroughs (Swan Point, Md.) crushed two homeruns on Saturday, including a game-tying three-run shot in the series finale, but the Limestone University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader, including one on a walk off, to Carson-Newman University.

GAME 1 INFORMATION
Score: Carson-Newman 9, Limestone 2
Records: Carson-Newman (21-15, 6-7), Limestone (4-33, 1-16)
Location: Silver Diamond Baseball Complex

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • After ending a homerun drought last night, Burroughs went yard for a second straight game
  • Junior Joah Nelson (Woodruff, S.C.) crushed his first career homerun for the Saints
  • Graduate Brandt Cronebach (Englewood, Ohio) went 2-for-4 at the plate
  • Junior James MacCallum (Atlanta, Ga.) also finished with a pair of base knocks
  • Sophomore Dylan Shugan (Alpharetta, Ga.) singled, walked, and stole a base
  • Junior Brandon Billesberger (Cochrane, Alberta) doubled and added a walk
  • Sophomore Peyton Reel (Clover, S.C.) tallied a base hit
  • Sophomore starter Jake Contino (Mooresville, N.C.) allowed seven runs over four innings
  • Contino struck out three, but allowed six hits and four walks to fall to 0-2 on the season
  • Junior reliever Alex Canino (Blythewood, S.C.) scattered a run and six hits over three frames

HOW IT HAPPENED

After working around a one-out error in the bottom of the first, Limestone put itself in a jam with back-to-back leadoff walks in the second before a bunt single would load the bases. Despite a strikeout by Contino, the Eagles used a two-run single before then adding a two-out RBI base knock to make it 3-0.

Cronebach led the third off with a single back up the gut, but the Saints were unable to move him over, before Carson-Newman added two more in the home half to move in front, 5-0. Limestone would have a golden opportunity to get back into the game in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with just one gone.

With one on and one out, Cronebach and Reel both reached on infield base hits to load the bags full of Saints. However, the visitors had a runner picked off at second base before the next batter grounded out softly as Limestone came away empty handed. The Eagles tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom half.

Carson-Newman extended the margin to 8-0 with a single tally in the sixth, but the Blue and Gold showed some fight in the seventh as Nelson led the frame off with a solo homerun – his first of the 2022 season. MacCallum then followed with a single, but the fourth double play of the game ended the attempted rally.

Billesberger doubled into the right-centerfield alley with two gone in the eighth, but he would be one of six Limestone runners stranded, before Burroughs homered for the second straight game – his ninth of the year – in the ninth. It was not enough though as Carson-Newman took the game and the series, 9-2.

GAME 2 INFORMATION
Score: Carson-Newman 6, Limestone 5 (8 innings)
Records: Carson-Newman (22-15, 7-7), Limestone (4-34, 1-17)
Location: Silver Diamond Baseball Complex

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Burroughs went 2-for-4 with a three-run homerun in the series finale
  • Shugan also bashed a homerun in the final game – his third longball over the last five games
  • Billesberger finished with two base knocks and an RBI for the Blue and Gold
  • MacCallum added a single as the top four batters in the lineup accounted for all seven hits
  • Junior starter Walker Sigman (Austin, Texas) allowed five runs – four earned – in a no-decision
  • He surrendered seven hits and two walks over four innings to go with a pair of strikeouts
  • Graduate Garrett Sutton (Gastonia, N.C.) threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen
  • Freshman Hunter Potzner (Gainesville, Ga.) took the loss in extra innings, falling to 1-2

HOW IT HAPPENED

For the third straight game of the series, the Eagles jumped out to an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first and a four-spot in the second to pull ahead, 5-0. Limestone had just one base runner over the first three innings but started chipping away as Shugan launched a leadoff homerun in the fourth.

With two gone in the fifth, the Saints stormed all the way back in the frame following an RBI single by Billesberger and a single to left by Shugan to keep the inning going. With runners on first and second, Burroughs launched a game-tying, three-run blast over the wall in left as Limestone pulled even at 5-all.

Sutton was called upon and worked around a one-out walk in the fifth before ending the sixth with a 6-4-3 double play. Heading into extra innings for the first time this season, Limestone left the go-ahead run stranded in scoring position before the Eagles walked it off, 6-5, with a one-out solo shot in the eighth.
