
Lions downed by visiting Trojans
The Mars Hill softball team (3-13, 0-4 SAC) dropped both games of their South Atlantic Conference doubleheader versus Anderson (19-3, 3-1 SAC) by scores of 4-2 and 10-2.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (3-13, 0-4 SAC) dropped both games of their South Atlantic Conference doubleheader versus Anderson (19-3, 3-1 SAC) by scores of 4-2 and 10-2.
GAME ONE: AU 4, MHU 2
Anderson struck late to take game one by a score of 4-2.
Tied at two entering the top of the sixth, Olivia Wheeler's two-run single to center field plated Hannah Whitaker and Kayson Boatner for the game-winning runs.
Morgan Charter opened the scoring with a RBI single to left center in the top of the first. Mars Hill responded in the bottom of the third as Maggine Langheim put the Lions in front with a two-run home run.
In the top of the fifth, a RBI double from Gracie Williams tied the game at two.
Wheeler and Jessica Neadow led all players with two hits while Wheeler and Langheim led their respective teams with two RBI apiece.
Laken Maxwell struck out 18 batters for the complete game win.
GAME TWO: AU 10, MHU 2
The Trojans' offense exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth to clinch the Friday sweep.
Leading 5-2, Anderson plated five more, highlighted by Maddie Carpenter's three-run double in the top of the sixth.
The score was tied at one after the first inning. Maggie Langheim hit her second home run of the day in the bottom of the frame.
The Trojans took a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth and added two more as Sydney Belcher hit a two-run home run. The Lions cut the deficit in half as Miranda Marks scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Carpenter led all players with three RBI. Three Trojans recorded multiple hit games. Langheim and Marks led the Lions with two hits apiece.
Harlie Duncan earned her seventh win of the season, striking out five in six innings of work.
The Lions travel to Banner Elk, North Carolina on Monday, March 14 when they face Lees-McRae. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
