Women's Volleyball tops ECSU to clinch winning weekend at Chowan

Murfreesboro, N.C. ---- The Catawba College women's volleyball team knocked off the Elizabeth City State Vikings by a score of three sets to one in their final match of the Chowan Tournament, making it back to back wins at the Hawks Athletic Center to improve to 2-2 on the season

 

TEAM STATS

- Catawba racked up 52 kills at a .183% rate compared to Elizabeth City St.'s 35 on a .055% clip

- Elizabeth City State had 28 errors to Catawba's 24

- Catawba's setters had a big performance, serving up 51 assists to 33 on the Vikings' side

- Elizabeth City State led the way in digs with 64 compared to Catawba's 59

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- After tying for the lead in kills in Catawba's last outing, Maillie Chretien left no doubt in this game as she led the way with 14. Jordan Danielson and Katrina Misra tied for second with nine apiece.

- Siena Roethler just beat out Dara Kane to lead Catawba in assists, with a career high 23. Kane had 22 of her own as the two combined for 45 of 51 assists in the winning effort

- Riley Hill had another strong defensive showing with 21 digs, as Chretien added 12 of her own along with her kills in an excellent two-way performance

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

- Catawba jumped out to a seven-to-two lead, buoyed by a pair of aces from Chretien and a pair of kills from Katrina Misra

- Chloe Danielson added three kills of her own to make it 13-8 Catawba and keep them in front

- Elizabeth City State wouldn't go away; with Catawba up 18-15, the Vikings clawed back with a five-to-two point run spurred on by Victoria White to even the score at 20-20

- Catawba pulled back ahead to take a 23-20 lead thanks to a pair of errors, but Destiny Davenport ensured that Elizabeth City State stayed right with them as they tied the game up again at 24-24

- It would be the Vikings who took the opening set, as they ripped off four straight points to turn a 22-24 deficit into a 26-24 victory in Set 1

 

SECOND SET

- Both sides battled out to a five-to-five start before Catawba caught fire, ripping off six straight points as Jordan Danielson notched a pair of kills

- The lead would stretch to 16-7 Catawba as the errors piled up for the Vikings, and the closest that Elizabeth City State would come the rest of the set would be within four points at 18-14 as they attempted to mount a comeback with four straight points

- Catawba held firm, answering with a seven-to-three run to close out the set and take the win. Four different players recorded a kill to help Catawba level the game at one set apiece

 

THIRD SET

- It was a battle to the end, with no team being ahead by more than three until the final run by Catawba to seal the set

- Three kills from Katrina Misra kept Catawba knotted with Elizabeth City State as both teams started off seven-to-seven, before the Vikings threatened to pull away thanks to three straight points

- Catawba answered to make it ten-to-nine, only to see Elizabeth City State pull out in front by three again at 13-to-10 and then 17-to-14.

- A run fueled by a pair of Jordan Danielson kills brought Catawba back to 19-to-19, and after going down 20-to-19 on the next play they wouldn't trail again

- Catawba would close a second straight set thanks to an opportune stretch of scoring, putting a six-to-one run on the Vikings after going down thanks to three huge aces from Dara Kane to close it out, 25-21

 

FOURTH SET

- Catawba's hot run of form carried over from the previous set, as they took the first two points and raced out to a seven-to-three lead. Catawba wouldn't trail at all over the course of the final set

- Catawba managed to keep their distance, with a three-point Elizabeth City State run bringing them to within four at 13-9

- Catawba would open the lead back up to six and keep it that way the rest of the way, answering every Viking point with more of their own to put ECSU on the brink 24-16

- A Chloe Danielson kill would close the deal for Catawba and give them their second straight win in Murfreesboro, ending the Chowan Tournament with a 2-1 record

- Catawba is back in action on Tuesday, as they return home to Goodman Gym to face 18th-ranked Wingate at 7 p.m.
