Coker Takes Belmont Abbey to Extra Innings but Falls Short

Gastonia, NC - The Coker University Baseball Team dropped their game against Belmont Abbey despite going to extra innings. 

Belmont Abbey jumped sprung into action quickly against the Cobras, scoring their first run in the first inning. Despite an early lead, Donavan Frayer answered with an RBI, running Tristan Melvin home in the third inning. The Cobras luck continued as they added on another run in the third inning, Frayer being the one to cross home plate this time. Belmont Abbey continued to keep pace with the Cobras, scoring their third run of the night. The Crusaders scored an extra two runs to close out the third inning. Cameron Ferrell was the next to cross home plate in the 5th inning, bringing the Cobras withing reaching distance of the Crusaders. Although the close score in the beginning, Belmont Abbey quickly extended their lead to 4-8 by the seventh inning. It wasn't until the eighth that the Cobras made a comeback, only being one run under Belmont Abbey at 7-8. Adam Wilkerso was the tying run, brought in by the pitcher who walked the previous batter. Coker was able to go up 9-8 in the top of the eighth, hoping to finalize the game. Unfortunately, Belmont Abbey was able to close out in the 10th and final inning against the Cobras.

Aaron Diaz (65-33), Zack Hinson (49-27), Lawson Otte (27-18), Noah Emig (2-2), and Cooper Thomas (53-29) pitched for the Cobras throughout the game.

Coker will return to the field on Saturday (Feb. 4th) against Belmont Abbey for the double header of their series. The double header will take place at Carolina Bank Stadium, the first pitch being thrown at 11 AM. Live stats and streaming will be available at www.coker.cobras.com
