Cobras Battle Through Double OT to Claim Conference Victory Over Mars Hill

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker University women's soccer team fought through two hard overtime periods before coming out victorious against Mars Hill 2-1 on Saturday (Oct. 9) in front of a Homecoming crowd.

The Cobras dominated play for the majority of regulation by outshooting the Lions 11-4, but five saves from freshman Camryn Miller kept Mars Hill in the game. Both teams were held scoreless in the first extra period but four minutes into the second overtime, Mars Hill committed a costly foul  in the box setting up a penalty kick opportunity for the Cobras. Freshman Dylan Winstead stepped up and put the ball in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal to clinch the victory for Coker.

The Cobras were led by senior Gabby Sturla, who recorded five shots in the match. She was supported by freshman Lexi Lilly and sophomore Mackenzie Hochreiter who both added three shots each. Junior Sarah Swaim put up three saves in the match, bringing her career total to 249.

The Cobras will be back in action next Wednesday (Oct. 13) when they travel to Wingate, N.C. to take on the Bulldogs of Wingate University in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. Live stats and video will be available at www.cokercobras.com
