INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Senior Garrett Lowery (Dallas, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs
  • Junior Matt Orth (Asheboro, N.C.) collected two hits, including a homerun
  • Junior DH Brennan Strovink (Rocky Point, N.Y.) added two hits, a double and an RBI
  • Freshman Trace Whetsell (Gilbert, S.C.) chipped in a double
  • Limestone finished with eight base hits

HOW IT HAPPENED

Innings 1-3

Making his first career start, freshman starter Garrett Sutton (Gastonia, N.C.) ran into trouble right away as three straight base hits to start the game staked Carson-Newman to a quick 1-0 lead. The Eagles would hang a total of five runs in the frame, highlighted by Greg Jones' three-run homerun.

In the bottom of the first, Limestone got one of those runs back when Orth launched a first-pitch fastball over the rightfield wall for his first long ball of the season. However, Carson-Newman would add a single run in the top of the third as Jones sent an RBI single back up the middle to make it a 6-1 game.

Innings 4-6

The Saints cut the margin in half in the fourth following back-to-back RBI singles by Lowery and sophomore third baseman Chase Allen (Sharpsburg, Ga.). Limestone was primed to close the gap even further with two on and one out, but an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.

Carson-Newman then plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, capped by a long sacrifice fly off the bat of Ryan Addington, to once again push the advantage back to five runs (8-3).

Innings 7-9

The Eagles tallied a single run in the seventh and one more in the eighth to put the game out of reach, 10-3. Limestone added a run in the bottom of the eighth as a one-out single by Orth came around to score on a base knock by Lowery, but Carson-Newman would push another run across in the ninth.

A leadoff double by Whetsell in the bottom of the ninth would close the scoring after he was chased home on an RBI groundout by junior Brandon Etheridge (Cartersville, Ga.) two batters later, but it would do little to change the outcome as the Saints dropped their first home game of the year by a final of 11-5.

TURNING POINT

Carson-Newman took control of the contest before the first out was recorded, jumping to a 1-0 lead following three straight base hits to start the game. The Eagles struck for five runs in the frame and were never really threatened much the rest of the way.

NOTABLES

  • Lowery extended his hitting streak to 11 straight games dating back to last season
  • The loss snapped Limestone's seven-game home win streak against Carson-Newman
  • The Saints fall to 13-14 all-time against the Eagles
