Emory & Henry Softball Posts A Run-Rule Sweep Of Ursuline, 13-4 & 10-2, Sunday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Softball Team (12-3) picked up another pair of run-rule victories on Sunday, topping Ursuline College (0-2) by scores of 13-4 and 10-2.

Game One – Emory & Henry 13, Ursuline 4 (five innings)
E&H got on the board in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run by senior first baseman Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.). Ursuline answered in the top of the second when Heidi Earl scored on a dropped fly ball.

In the bottom of the second, the Wasps pushed the margin to 6-1 with senior right fielder Danielle King (Spencer, Va.) driving in one on a sacrifice fly and sophomore third baseman Tristyn Tofano (Roanoke, Va.) plating another with a double to left.

Three runs by the Arrows in the third closed the gap to 6-4. Spencer Mohr notched a RBI infield single and Earl had a two-run base knock to right.

Emory & Henry scored two in its half of the third with senior centerfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) and King notching RBI base knocks to left. The fifth frame saw the Wasps close the contest out, 13-4. King drove in another run but it was Tofano who ended the game with a bang, drilling a three-run home run to centerfield.

E&H junior Malorie Reeves (Galax, Va.) earned the victory in the circle, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. UC's Macy Searles took the loss, allowing 13 runs on 12 hits with two walks.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 10, Ursuline 2 (five innings)
Emory & Henry jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first with Taylor stroking another three-run shot to left-center. Four more runs came around including two by bases-loaded walks and one by a hit by pitch.

In the second, the Arrows got a run back as Evelyn Vallejo drove in a run with a bases-loaded groundout. E&H made it a 9-1 contest in the second on a two-run homer by freshman first baseman Liberty Johnson (Arvonia, Va.). In the third, the Wasps tacked on another for a 10-1 lead as junior shortstop Rachel Hill (Standardsville, Va.) singled to right-center.

Ursuline scored another in the top of the fourth as Jaden Seay plated Christina Dalton with a single to center but would get no closer than 10-2, going down in order in the fifth to signal another shortened contest.

Wasp senior right-hander MaKayla Dowdy (Blacksburg, Va.) got the win, allowing one earned run on four hits and three strikeouts. Ursuline's Kailey Vaillancourt suffered the loss, as she was chased after two-thirds of an inning allowing seven runs on four hits and three walks.

Emory & Henry will make it three straight days with a home doubleheader on Monday, taking on Virginia State University at noon.
