Bats Come Alive to Help Trojans Salvage Split with Walsh

Anderson, S.C. - Anderson University Softball split its twin bill with nonconference opponent Walsh University, dropping game one, 5-1, and winning game two, 8-0 (6innings) , on Monday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex. The Trojans move to 15-3 overall while the Cavaliers move to 3-5 overall.

"All day everyday it has to be team before self," said head coach Tommy Hewitt. "As Tony Dungy says, "we got to find the soul of our team."

Anderson got on the scoreboard first in the third inning of play, before giving up five runs over the final four innings of play to set the final score at, 5-1. The Black and Gold collected just three hits, hitting the ball hard a few occasions with the Cavaliers defense playing solid behind Sarah Gockenbach (3-0).

Freshman Laken Maxwell (6-2) pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four hits and four runs. Senior Sarah Middleton pitched the final 3.1 innings, giving up one hit and one run while striking out four.

KEY TROJANS

-Kennedy Burton batted 1-for-2 with a run scored.

The Trojans bats came alive in game two, collecting 11 total hits. The Black and Gold opened the first inning with a run, scoring three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth and sixth inning. Senior Harlie Duncan (8-0) pitched a one-hit shutout, while striking out five batters.

KEY TROJANS

-Hannah Whitaker batted 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored.
-Burton went 2- for-4 with a triple and three runs scored.
-Kayson Boatner went 1-for-3 with a home run, game ending sacrifice fly and three RBI.

UP NEXT

Anderson remains home to host nonconference opponent Emmanuel on Wednesday. First-Pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 pm.
