GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Concordia-St. Paul (1-1) picked up its first win of the 2018 season, defeating Tusculum College (2-3) 13-11 on the road on Monday afternoon. The Golden Bears remain on the road on Wednesday at inaugural program Mars Hill with a 2 p.m. (CT) draw in North Carolina.
Sophomores
Kailey Heinl and
Alina Boyce led Concordia with three goals apiece while sophomore
Maddie Hentges also had three points with two goals and an assist. The trio were Concordia's scoring leaders a year ago in the Golden Bears' inaugural season, as well.
Tusculum was led by Erin Sims with a hat trick while Madison Malone had four points with a goal and three assists.
Concordia scored the first two goals of the contest, Boyce on a feed from freshman
Margot Coomes in the fifth minute and Hentges who was assisted by senior
Kallie LaValle in the sixth for a 2-0 goal lead.
Tusculum would force ties at two, five, six and 10 but would Concordia only allowed the Pioneers to take one lead all day following a three goal run in the middle minutes of the first half for a 6-5 advantage.
Concordia responded with a four goal run of its own with lone upperclassmen LaValle and junior
Sheala Osborne teaming up to tie the game in the 19th minute with Osborne on the assist. Sophomore
Kaci Reid scored on a free position shot in the 22nd minute to close out the run.
From there, Concordia clamped down defensively as the teams played scoreless for the next eight minutes when Tusculum netted a late first half goal with just 21 seconds to play before the break to narrow the margin to two, 9-7.
In the second half, the Pioneers scored three of the first four goals to knot the game at 10 just 6:44 into play before Concordia defender
Cassidy Leininger scored in the ninth minute to put Concordia ahead for good. Hentges added a free position shot two minutes later to push the lead to two.
After Tusculum cut the margin back to one in the 14th minute, the teams were scoreless for the next 15 minutes when Osborne came up with a clutch goal with 1:45 to play in the contest in the 29th minute.
Coomes, LaValle and Osborne each had a goal and an assist in the game for Concordia.
Defensively, freshman
Lexi Stanley was disruptive for CSP in collecting five ground balls with three caused turnovers - both team highs. Heinl led Concordia on the draw with four draw controls.
Freshman
Claire Hagen was credited with her first victory in goal for Concordia, playing the final 23:16 while making a pair of saves and allowing just one goal. Sophomore
Katie Lottsfeldt played the first 36:44, making five saves with four of those coming in the first half.
The final stats resembled how close the game was on the scoreboard with CSP edging Tusculum in shots (29 to 25), turnovers (23 to 26) and clears (20-25 to 17-23) while Tusculum held the advantage in draw controls (14 to 12) and fouls (27 to 34) with ground balls even at 24 each.
