
Mars Hill falls to Erskine, Lander
The Mars Hill softball team (0-6) was defeated by both Erskine and Lander to close out the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic.
GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (0-6) was defeated by both Erskine and Lander to close out the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic.
Game 1: EC 15 - MHU 7
Erskine used an eight-run seventh inning to come away with their second win of the season.
Tied at seven, Maddie Ingram's RBI double drove in the game-winning run as Hailey Patterson crossed home. Patterson and Ingram, later in the inning, both picked up two more RBI to increase the lead to 15-7.
Falling behind 2-0 after the top of the first, the Lions reeled off six straight runs, highlighted by two-run home runs by Micki Maxson in the second and Farley Park in the third. In the top of the fourth, Sydney McInnis' three-run double tied the game at six. In the bottom half of the frame, Alicia Wittenhagen put the Lions up once again with a solo home run to left center.
McInnins led all players with four RBI followed by Ingram's three hits and three RBI. Park led the Lions with three RBI on two hits.
Kaley Ingle picked up the win, allowing six runs on nine hits in seven innings. Marissa Adame suffered the loss.
Game 2: LU 5 – MHU 4
The Bearcats came out strong with a 4-0 lead after the first inning holding the Lions to zero until the fourth inning. Farley Park and Peyton Duba broke the shutout bid and each scored a run in the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to three.
Alyssa Christopher and Sydney Craig were able to cross home off of a Park two-run single in the top of the fifth, but their comeback bid fell short as Lander held on for their sixth win of the season.
Shannon Antonini and Barbara Cook led the Bearcats with two RBI while Park led all players with three hits.
The Lions return to action Saturday, February 19 at Emmanuel College (Ga.), first game is set for 12:00 p.m. and the second game is set for 2:00 p.m.
