
Lions open up Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic
The Mars Hill softball team (0-4) was defeated by both Lander and Erskine Friday afternoon on day one of the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic.
GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (0-4) was defeated by both Lander and Erskine Friday afternoon on day one of the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic.
Game 1: LU 4 - MHU 2
After two innings the teams were tied at zero. Alyssa Christopher's RBI single to center opened the scoring in the top of the third, scoring Zoie Pistel. Later in the frame, on a double steal, Katie Todd was able to score the Lions' second run.
The Lions were able to hold the Bearcats to zero runs until the fifth inning, where Logan Coward was able to tie the game with a two-run double. The Bearcats were able to strike out three of the four Lion batters in the sixth inning and were able to add one more run to their score to hold off the Lions and pick up the win.
Coward and Bridgett Tierney each recorded two hits to lead all players. Liz Gollin earned the win, throwing four perfect innings and striking out six. Marissa Adame was credited with the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings.
Game 2: EC 11 - MHU 1
The Flying Fleet came out strong with a 5-0 lead after the first inning. They added six more in the second more in the second, carrying an 11-0 lead after two innings. Sydney Craig was able to put a dent in the lead in the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch.
Kali Morton earned the win, allowing just two hits in four innings pitched. Kayla Gallagher suffered the loss, allowing five runs in one inning.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, February 12 continuing in the Brianna Surrento Kickoff Classic with another double header against Erskine College and Lander University. First pitch for the Lions is set for 9 a.m.
