HOW IT HAPPENED

First Half

Playing outside of Gaffney for the first time since an overtime loss in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, Limestone fell behind the eight-ball very quickly as the Royals scored the go-ahead score just 89 ticks into the contest. However, the Blue and Gold was quick with the equalizer 10 minutes later.

Playing the counterattack, Peeters pushed a long through ball behind the defense in a perfect spot for Ortiz who then turned on the jets and beat the keeper 1-on-1 for his first goal of the year. Limestone had some decent looks over the next six minutes, but four shot attempts were blocked to keep things even.

Limestone got a fortunate break in the 24th minute after an attempt on a wide-open cage off a rebounded shot in the box sailed high over the crossbar. The Saints were not as fortunate in the 35th minute though as a hard tackle in the box resulted in a successful penalty kick to put the Royals in front, 2-1, at the half.

Second Half

Queens extended the margin to 3-1 with a long strike from about 35 yards away in the 55th minute, but the Saints answered off a long set piece just 40 seconds later. Fromholzer served a free kick to the near post for Marx who in turn sent a header across the cage where Render was in position to finish, making it 3-2.

The Blue and Gold had a pair of great looks at the equalizer over the next couple of minutes, but Queens' keeper Tim Tretbar made two tremendous saves on shots from Caamano and junior Angelo Fabricio (Jundiai, Brazil) as the home team maintained its 3-2 advantage with time winding down in regulation.

Limestone turned up the pressure down the stretch and was finally able to bust through with less than three minutes remaining. After Marx turned the ball up field for a good 20 yards, de Laaf accepted his through ball on the right wing before turning the corner on the defense and beating the keeper with a low liner into the low left corner – his first goal of the year – to tie things up at 3-all with 2:35 left on the clock.

Extra Time

The Saints kept the offensive pressure dialed up in extra time, and it would pay dividends in the 98th minute. On a counterattack, de Laaf collected a pass and dribbled deep down the right wing before sending a solid ground pass to the far post where Caamano blasted the golden goal into the netting.

TURNING POINT

After falling behind 3-1 early in the second half, Limestone could have easily mailed it in especially with a reduced spring schedule. That was not the case, however, as the Blue and Gold immediately responded to the score by Queens, and then got the equalizer with 2:35 left in regulation. With Uncle Mo clearly with the Saints, the visitors completed the come-from-behind victory, 4-3, with a golden goal in the 98th minute.

  • Tristyn de Laaf recorded his 15th career goal while Marx added a career-high two assists
