
Evans drives in four versus Catawba

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (6-9, 1-5 SAC) was swept Tuesday afternoon versus Catawba (14-2, 4-2 SAC) by scores of 11-8 in extra innings in game one and 12-3 in game two.
GAME ONE: CAT 11, MHU 8
The Indians scored four runs in the top of the 10th frame to come away with the game one victory.
The Lions entered the bottom of the sixth down 7-4 before Ashley Evans tied the game with one swing of the bat. Evans' home run to left field plated Brookelynn Nanney and Danielle Harris.
Jordan Dean's two-run single proved to be enough for the Indians in the top of the 10th. Both Gracie Gibson and Brittany Ireland added insurance runs later in the frame.
Evans opened the scoring with a RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first, plating Harris. Gibson provided the lead for Catawba in the top of third with a three-run home run.
Mars Hill responded in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs, highlighted by Ashley Hamlin's two-run double. In the top of the fourth, Riley Tucker drove in two with a single up the middle to regain the 5-4 lead. Carlee Brawley's two-run double in the top of the fifth ran the Indians' lead up to three.
Gibson and Evans led their respective teams with four RBI. Brawley recorded a team-high three hits for Catawba while Nanney and Evans each posted three hits in the contest.
Marissa Adame broke her own record, striking out 18 in 9.1 innings of work in the loss. Madison Hunter allowed one run in her four innings of work for the win.
GAME TWO: CAT 12, MHU 3
Sydney Goertzen led the Indians to the Tuesday sweep, going 3-of-4 at the plate and driving in five runs.
Goertzen, with Catawba leading 5-2 in the top of the third, doubled down the left field line, plating Kayla Pedersen and Madison Taylor. In the top of the sixth with the bases loaded, her double to left field cleared the bases, putting Catawba up by eight. A RBI single from Carlee Brawley later in the frame pushed the lead to nine.
The Indians' struck early in the first, putting three up on the board, highlighted by Jordan Dean's two-run single. In the bottom of the frame, Maggie Langheim cranked a two-run home run to cut the deficit to one.
Up 4-2 in the third, Kayla Pedersen drove a double into right center field to score Allie Baker, going up by three.
Kylee Lewis, in the bottom of the fifth and with the bases loaded, collected the first RBI of her career with a single to center field that scored Maegan Blair.
Goertzen and Dean led the Indians with three hits apiece. Summer Howerton allowed two earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Lions travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina on Thursday, March 11 when they face Converse in non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
