
Joyce nets game-winning goal in final minute versus Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (7-7, 3-6 SAC) defeated Newberry (10-5, 4-4 SAC), 15-14, in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon on the road.
With 55 seconds remaining in the third quarter, a Chloe Wood goal was the catalyst for a Newberry 6-0 run, carrying over into the fourth, tying the game at 14-all with 4:47 remaining in the contest. Following a Newberry penalty, Sydney Joyce was awarded a free position with one minute remaining in the contest. She converted for her fifth goal of the day, sealing the victory.
Mars Hill led 2-1 after the first 15 minutes of play and expanded their lead to 9-4 entering the half, outscoring the Wolves 7-3. Joyce netted the hat-trick in the frame. During a 4-0 run midway through the second, Mars Hill got two goals from Kiersten Foust and a goal apiece from Haley Stallings and Tiffany Saavedra. Maria Fabrizio collected three assists in the quarter.
Both teams potted five apiece in the third. Foust and Wood led their respective teams, scoring twice apiece in the quarter.
Fabrizio (1g, 5a) led all players with six points followed by Joyce's five goals. Cassell Richardson (5g) led the Wolves with five points followed by Wood (4g) and Marissa Plumer's (4a) four points.
Virginia Joy made 17 saves for her fourth win of the season.
The Lions close out the 2022 season at home on Saturday, April 23 when they host Lenoir-Rhyne. First draw control is set for 4 p.m.
