
Mars Hill sweeps Coker in season finale
The Mars Hill softball team (14-23, 5-19 SAC) swept Coker (16-18, 9-15 SAC) by scores of 12-3 and 9-4 Monday afternoon to close out the 2021 season.

GAME ONE: MHU 12, COK 3 (5 Innings)
Brookelynn Nanney's walkoff grand slam gave the Lions the five-inning win in game one.
The Lions led by five in the fifth following a Coker error that allowed Ashley Hamlin to score. Nanney drilled a pitch over the right center field fence to end the game early; the fourth Lions' home run of the game.
Peyton Duba opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a three-run home run that scored Nanney and Ashley Evans. She hit her second of the game, a two-run shot in her next at-bat in the third. Later in the frame, Alicia Wittenhagen hit a two-run home run of her own to put the Lions up 7-0 after three.
Coker hit two home runs in the top of the fourth to break the shutout bid. Ava Jay hit a two-run home run over the left field fence and later in the stanza, Kayla Oswell hit a solo shot to cut the deficit to four.
Duba led all players with five RBI followed by Nanney's four while Wittenhagen led the Lions with three hits.
Marissa Adame earned her first win on the day, allowing three runs on two hits in three innings pitched while striking out seven. Emily Van Horn came in for relief duty, striking out two in two innings.
GAME TWO: MHU 9, COK 4
Five unanswered runs by Mars Hill provided the Lions their second win on the day, completing the sweep.
Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the second, Alicia Wittenhagen's second home run of the day, a two-run shot, tied the game. Later in the inning, Micki Maxson hit a two-run home run over the left field fence, plating Sydney Craig to take the 4-2 lead.
Coker responded in the top of the third, as RBI singles Kayla Oswell and Jena Dewalt tied the game at four.
The Lions, in the bottom of the fourth, plated three, highlighted by Craig's RBI double to left center field. In the bottom of the fifth, Maggie Langheim plated Paige Jeffries with a RBI double to left while Ashley Hamlin's RBI single up the middle added another insurance run, putting the Lions up 9-4.
Maxson led all players with three RBI while Hamlin went 2-for-2 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Marissa Adame picked up her second win of the day, throwing a dominant four innings that saw six strikeouts and one hit.
