
Mars Hill opens home slate versus King
The Mars Hill softball team (5-5) opened their 2025 home schedule hosting King (4-4) Friday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (5-5) opened their 2025 home schedule hosting King (4-4) Friday afternoon. They dropped both games by scores of 10-8 and 8-0, respectively.
GAME ONE: KU 10, MHU 8
Mars Hill trailed 8-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth before chipping away at the Tornado lead. In the bottom of the frame, Camryn Sterling broke King's shutout bid with a RBI single that scored Farley Park. With the bases loaded, the Lions drew three walks, cutting the lead in half, 8-4. Sara Rexrode's sacrifice fly capped off the five-run inning, plating Sterling.
The Tornado pulled away again in the top of the seventh as Shaina Addair built their lead back up to five with a two-run home run.
A resilient Lions' squad battled in the bottom of the seventh, plating three, highlighted by Brooke Hanson's two-run single down the right field line, scoring Bri Weimer and Daci Sarver. The comeback bid fell just short as King clung on to the two-run lead to take game one.
Addair led all players with three hits and three RBI.
Weimer and Hanson led the Lions with two hits apiece while Hanson led the team with three RBI.
GAME TWO: KU 8, MHU 0 - 5 Innings
The Tornado used the long ball in game two, hitting three home runs in the contest to shut out the Lions and complete the sweep.
In the top of the first, Tori Ryan hit a two-run shot to left field. In the top of the third, Jessica Campbell hit the second two-run home run of the game and later in the frame, Rachel Jardin hit a grand slam to left center.
The Lions were held to just two hits, one off the bat of both Leah Grimes and Riley Waters.
Mars Hill returns to Ponder Field on Wednesday, February 19 when they take on Belmont Abbey at 12 p.m. in non-conference play.
