Cobras Sweep Railsplitters in Saturday Doubleheader

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team improved to 27-9 and 4-2 in South Atlantic Conference play after picking up a pair of SAC wins over Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday (Mar. 25). The Cobras won game one by a score of 6-3, and then turned around to take game two by a score of 4-2. 

LMU got on the board first, plating an RBI single in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. After doubling to lead off for the Cobras and advancing to third on a single by Cacey Simmons, Kelsi Bachmann scored on a delayed steal to tie the game up at 1-1. After advancing to third on a groundout, Simmons scored on a Tayler Barcomb sac fly to give the Cobras a 2-1 lead. The Coker bats stayed hot in the second inning, scoring three runs, headlined by a two-run home run by Maria Williamson. The Railsplitters added another run in third to close the deficit to 5-2. A single by Allyson High in the bottom of the fifth scored Barcomb and put the Cobras on top 6-2. LMU added another in the sixth, but it would not be enough as the Navy and Gold picked up the win in game one by a score of 6-3.

Williamson led the way with two RBI. Hannah Price had the lone multi-hit game for the Cobras, while Simmons, Barcomb and High all recorded one RBI.

Nikki Linthicum improved to 6-2 on the season. She allowed two runs on five hits in four innings. Christine Carver earned her second save of the season, allowing no earned runs in three innings.

In game two, LMU plated two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, a sac fly by Cacey Simmons scored Mindy North to close the deficit to 2-1. Williamson stepped up next and belted a two-RBI double to center field to give Coker a 3-2 lead. Williamson was not done there, as she belted her twelfth home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Navy and Gold the 4-2 lead. LMU threatened in the top of the seventh, however, the Cobras were able quiet the Railsplitters and pick up the 4-2 win in game two and secure the sweep.

Williamson led the way, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Bachmann, Simmons, and North all recorded hits in the win.

Taylor Forehand improved to 6-1 on the season. She allowed two runs on four hits in five innings, while striking out five. In relief, Tabitha Allen allowed two hits in an inning and Christine Carver picked up her third save of the season, striking out one batter in one inning.

The Cobras will be back in action tomorrow (Mar. 26) at 2 and 4 p.m. to welcome No. 22 Limestone College.
