
Mars Hill concludes season at SAC Quarterfinal versus Wingate
The No. 8 seeded Mars Hill volleyball team (14-12) was defeated by the No. 1 seeded Wingate Bulldogs (26-2) in straight sets (14-25, 16-25, 22-25) in South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal play Monday night on the road.
WINGATE, N.C. - The No. 8 seeded Mars Hill volleyball team (14-12) was defeated by the No. 1 seeded Wingate Bulldogs (26-2) in straight sets (14-25, 16-25, 22-25) in South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal play Monday night on the road.
The quarterfinal appearance marked the sixth straight for the Lions.
The Bulldogs knocked down 16 kills in the first, hitting .400 as a team. Amber Rowoldt led all players with four kills. Jada Cannon led the Lions with three in the frame, followed by two apiece from Skylar Ogden and Nikkayla Stewart. Rowoldt and Laela Jimenez led their respective teams with nine digs apiece.
In the second, Wingate hit a match-high .469, recording 18 kills on 32 attempts with just three errors. The Lions hit a team-best .185 in the frame. Ioana Poenaru led the Lions with three kills on six swings. Maggie Young went 5-of-6, hitting .833 in the frame.
The trio of Poenaru, Stewart, and Timmons Yates recorded two kills apiece for the Lions in the final frame, but another strong offensive showing from the Bulldogs led them to their 17th straight win.
Poenaru and Stewart led the Lions with five kills apiece. Jimenez led the team with 13 digs. Jordan Schmucker recorded 17 assists and 11 digs for her 17th double-double of the season.
