The South Atlantic Conference and AstroTurf Present Senior Spotlights Featuring Newberry Baseball, Tennis and Track & Field
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – In light of the recent events of the COVID-19 pandemic that canceled the remainder of the 2020 South Atlantic Conference spring sports seasons, the SAC along with its corporate partner AstroTurf, will be presenting the SAC AstroTurf Senior Spotlights. These highlights will showcase the spring sports teams at each of our 12 institutions and will give fans a brief overview of the team's shortened season, while highlighting the 2020 senior student-athletes on each team.
We continue our AstroTurf Senior Spotlights with the Newberry College Wolves and the baseball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track & field teams.
BASEBALL
Coming off their first regular-season conference championship, the Newberry baseball team finished the 2020 season with a record of 18-6 overall and 7-2 in SAC play. Before conference play, the Wolves took two out of three from Nova Southeastern, who was ranked in the top 15 at the time, and the next week they swept Alabama at Huntsville, who finished the year ranked No. 12. The Wolves closed out the season ranked No. 29 in the Collegiate Baseball Division II National poll.
Dalton Lansdowne led the SAC in sacrifice bunts and third in stolen bases. Nick Butler finished the season leading the conference in stolen bases, while Jack Harris finished third in triples. On the mound, Ryan Harbin and Tomas Sorcia Jr. led the conference in games started, while Quinton Driggers led in total appearances. Driggers also led the SAC in strikeouts per nine innings and victories.
In addition to Harris, Sorcia, and Driggers, the Wolves were led by seven seniors, including Collin Allman, Kenny Bergmann, Austin Copeland, and Tony Matos.
Allman finished the season with a .345 batting average, a pair of homers, eight doubles, 10 stolen bases, 20 RBIs, and 24 runs scored.
Bergmann caught 12 games in 2020 batting .311 with six doubles, 10 RBIs, and seven runs scored.
Copeland saw one inning of work on the mound allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout.
Matos saw action in five games batting .111 with a double, two stolen bases, three RBIs, and a pair of runs scored.

WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Newberry women's tennis team finished the 2019-20 season with a 13-3 overall record, including going 6-0 in the fall. The 13 victories surpassed the team's win total of 12 last season in eight fewer matches.
In the spring, the Wolves would extend their winning streak to 11, including a sweep of Mars Hill to open up conference play. In their final match of the spring, Newberry narrowly defeated future SAC foe Limestone 4-3. Leading 1-0 after doubles, the Wolves got victories from Elisa Aguirre, Madison Conwell, and Lucia Davila to secure the win.
Senior Davila closed out the year with an 11-4 singles record, playing mostly at No. 5 singles. She was also 7-6 at No. 3 doubles with partner Conwell.

MEN'S TENNIS
Newberry men's tennis team finished the 2019-20 season with an even 5-5 record overall, and the Wolves were 2-1 in the conference.
The Wolves would start the spring with a 6-1 conference victory over Mars Hill. In their final conference match of the season, Newberry would rally to defeat Carson-Newman 4-3. Trailing 1-0 after doubles play, the Wolves would get victories from Edison Ambarzumjan, Enrico Haas, Luca Kirchhoff, and Lawrence Friedland to secure the narrow win.
Senior Ambarzumjan, the reigning SAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, closed out his career with 7-2 record at No. 1 singles and 5-3 record with partner Enrico Haas at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Bruce Edmonds finished the season with a 2-0 record in singles play and a 1-0 record at No. 2 doubles with partner Adam Black.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The Newberry women's track and field team finished 11th at the SAC Indoor Championship before their outdoor season was canceled.
Emma Johnson led the Wolves with a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal and school-record 9.30. Iris Duke finished seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 14.12 meters, while the 4x400 meter relay team of Tashayna Flinch, Charlotte Johnson, Emma Johnson, and Mandy Kirkley finished eighth.
In addition to Duke, senior Octavia Grandy placed 15th in the hammer throw with a toss of 32.33 meters.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
The Newberry men's track and field team finished 10th at the SAC Indoor Championship before their outdoor season was canceled.
Elijah Fulmore led the Wolves with a bronze medal in the 60-meter hurdles with a school-record and personal best 8.30. Antonio Buchanan finished fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best 13.89 meters.
The Wolves featured five seniors: Carlos Hernandez, Jorge Hernandez, Shelton Reynolds, Michael Richter, and Quinn Wilson.
All five were distance runners for the Wolves, competing in cross county for Newberry as well. Richter and Wilcon both competed in the Liberty Kickoff during the indoor season. Richter placed 18th in the 1,000-meter run and Wilson placed 27th in the mile.
