The South Atlantic Conference Announces Volleyball Players of the Week, Oct. 13
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate middle blocker Abby Saehler was selected as the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while Carson-Newman's Anna Patton was chosen as the AstroTurf SAC Volleyball Specialist of the Week for matches played Oct. 4-11, the League announced today.
Saehler, a junior from Iowa City, Iowa, led Wingate to a pair of SAC sweeps on the week as the Bulldogs finished the first half of League play with a 10-1 record. The AVCA All-American posted a .420 hitting percentage, tallied 28 kills, 4.67 kills per set and collected 23 digs. She also chipped in a pair of double-doubles as she averaged 3.83 digs per set. Saehler hit .500 at Newberry to begin the week with 13 kills, 12 digs, four blocks and an ace. At Anderson, she notched 15 kills, hit .367, made two blocks, an ace and piled up 11 digs. Saehler leads the SAC in hitting percentage, ranks second in kills per set and places fourth in blocks per set. The honor marks her second Player of the Week nod this season.
Patton, a sophomore from Franklin, Tenn., piled up 144 assists and 40 digs on a 3-1 week that included three non-SAC opponents. The sophomore setter has seven matches with 40 or more assists and recorded her second of the season at Lander where she posted 51. This feat made Patton the first Carson-Newman player to record 50 or more assists in a three set match since 2004. At Tusculum, she dished out 40 assists to go along with 15 digs and two kills in the Eagles' 3-0 sweep. Patton has posted eight double-doubles on the year, but a streak of five was broken at USC Aiken where the Eagles lost in three sets; she recorded 17 assists in the effort. The award is her first Specialist of the Week plaudit this season.
