Wingate’s Rebecca Brezovec named to Daktronics All-South Region Volleyball Team

Wingate, N.C.----The 2006 DAKTRONICS All-South Region Volleyball team was announced this week by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Wingate University senior middle blocker Rebecca Brezovec (Durham, N.C.) earns DAKTRONICS Volleyball All-South Region second team honors for the second year in a row.

Brezovec was the only representative from the South Atlantic Conference to earn DAKTRONICS Volleyball All-South Region laurels.

Florida Gulf Coast University led the way with a total of four selections, including three first team members. FGCU junior outside hitter Brooke Youngquist was also named the 2006 DAKTRONICS South Region Player of the Year. The University of Tampa and Florida Southern College followed Gulf Coast with three selections each, while Barry University, Wingate University, USC Aiken and Eckerd College each had one honoree.

The 2006 SAC Player of the Year, Brezovec is a two-time All-SAC middle blocker. Also, she won the SAC Scholar-Athlete Award for volleyball for the second time in 2006. The SAC Scholar-Athlete Award is a prestigious honor given to only one student-athlete in each of the league's 14 sports.

She was named SAC Player of the Week twice this season (August 28 and October 9). Wingate (25-7 overall) was SAC regular season co-champions and Food Lion SAC tournament champions. In 100 games in 2006, Brezovec has 405 kills (4.05/game), 103 blocks (1.03/game) and a .334 hitting percentage. The Riverside High School graduate is second in the SAC in hitting percentage.

Members of the All-South Region first team will advance to the national ballot and be eligible for the 2006 DAKTRONICS Volleyball All-American team. Voting for the DAKTRONICS Volleyball All-South Region Team was conducted among the Sports Information Directors at South Region institutions.
