Wingate University’s Lindsay Hinson Named Verizon Academic All-America in Volleyball
Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University junior outside hitter Lindsay Hinson (Tallahassee, Fla.) has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America® volleyball third team (college division), as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America).
Hinson is the 17th Wingate University student-athlete to earn Verizon Academic All-America® honors. She is the eighth WU student-athlete to receive this illustrious honor in the decade of the 2000s. Wingate University is ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division II schools producing Verizon Academic All-America® selections in the 2000s.
Hinson sports a perfect 4.00 GPA in her Biology major (with pre-med specialization). A three-year starter and 2002 team captain, Hinson led the Bulldogs to a 22-8 overall record (9-5 South Atlantic Conference) this season.
In November, Hinson earned the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for volleyball. The SAC Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to an outstanding student-athlete in each of the 14 sports sponsored by the SAC. The award is reserved for the brightest and best participating in each sport.
Hinson was the SAC volleyball "player of the week" the final week of the 2002 season, her second career POTW honor. In 2002, she had 10 double-doubles (kills, digs). She notched double-doubles in six of Wingate's seven matches. The Bulldogs won nine matches in a row before ending the season with a loss to Catawba in the Food Lion SAC tournament semifinals.
Statistically, Hinson compiled a .179 hitting percentage this season. She averaged 2.71 kills per game and 3.95 digs per game.
Off the court, she is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) leadership team and the Wingate University Student Government Association. In the summer, she serves as an FCA camp counselor for high school girls. She has served as a volunteer at the Brian Center Retirement Home and East Union Middle School.
Hinson is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Chi national honor societies. She won the Wingate University Freshman Biology Award in 2001. She has been listed on the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and Wingate University President's List every semester.
Student-athletes selected for Verizon Academic All-America honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. She must possess at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). She must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at her institution.
