Wingate Takes Home 2017 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Track and Field Crown
Hickory, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte and Wingate University captured the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, respectively. The meet, which concluded Saturday, took place on the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University at the Irwin Belk Track and Moretz Sports – Athletic Complex.
On the men's side, the Royals won their third straight league title with a total of 215 points. Queens was led by Jimmy Hollingsworth, who was named the SAC Men's Track Athlete Of The Year.
Hollingsworth won the 800-meter run (1:52.93), finished second in the 1,500-meter run (4:01) and was part of the Royals' 1,600-meter relay squad (3:22.19) which took first place.
In the women's competition, Wingate ended Queens' three-year reign as conference champions with 237.5 points.
The Bulldogs' Vanisha Wilshire won the triple jump (38'11") and high jump (5'8") to lead the way. In addition, Wingate's Tarah Young captured the 200-meter (24.15) and 400-meter (54.43) dashes and was part of the squad's league-champion 1,600-meter relay squad (3:52.13). Wingate also won the 400-meter relay with a time of 47.23 seconds.
