Wingate's Sapp Named South Atlantic Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Wingate's Naomi Sapp was voted the South Atlantic Conference Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the League announced today. She earned the honor for her achievements in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports, and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.
Sapp, a sophomore from Guyton, Ga., carries a 3.76 GPA as an elementary education major. A two-time South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient, she has been named to the Wingate Dean's List every semester she has been a Bulldog.
"Naomi is clearly an imperative member of the Wingate softball team, both athletically and academically," said Wingate head coach Lani Shaffer Ries. "She is a shining example of the Wingate commitment to excellence and represents the SAC with her dedication to her sport and the pursuit of a college degree."
On the field, Sapp earned first team All-South Atlantic Conference and second team All-Region honors after finishing the 2017 campaign with a .411 average at the plate to rank fifth in the League. She ranked sixth in the League with 69 hits and three triples. Sapp led her squad with 24 multi-hit games as she added 11 doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI. She slugged .548 on the year and closed out her season with an on base percentage of.476.
Sapp is a two-year member of the Wingate Student Athlete Advisory Committee and is a member of the Wingate SNCA. She has spent time volunteering at local elementary schools and helped organize the Wingate Fellowship of Christian Athletes community Trunk or Treat. She has also been a big part of helping to organize Wingate's summer softball camps.
