United Soccer Coaches Announces Men's Team Academic Award Winners
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – United Soccer Coaches released the Team Academic Award winners on Thursday (Oct. 4), recognizing exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2017-18 school year.
United Soccer Coaches annually celebrates the academic achievements of college soccer teams whose student-athletes collectively demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full academic year. College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster.
A total of 773 college soccer teams (289 men, 484 women) earned the honor, including 191 schools that had both their men's and women's programs among the recipients. Four men's teams from the South Atlantic Conference received the award.
Lincoln Memorial and Queens University of Charlotte are the two SAC representatives having both men's and women's teams recognized for their scholastic achievements.
The Railsplitters, coached by Helio D'Anna, earned a 3.55 grade-point average for the year. This is the 13th such honor for the men all-time, garnering the accolade for the 12th time in the last 13 years, every year since joining the conference except for one.
The Royals, led by Oliver Carias, were recognized for the second time in their program for their 3.24 GPA. Both honors have occurred within the last three years.
Ken Hassler's Catawba men's soccer squad claimed their program's first academic award from United Soccer Coaches by excelling with a 3.18 GPA.
Under the heading of Bryce Cooper, the Newberry men earned a 3.27 grade-point average, their sixth all-time. The Wolves have collected the recognition for the fifth consecutive year.
