The South Atlantic Conference Announces Men's Soccer Annual Awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Lenoir-Rhyne forward Ignacio de Goya was voted the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Year, while Mattia Ditommaso of Wingate was voted the Conference's Freshman of the Year. In addition, for the ninth time, Wingate mentor Gary Hamill was tabbed the Coach of the Year, the League announced today.
de Goya, a junior from Madrid, Spain, finished the regular season second in the league with 12 goals. A third of his goals sealed the win for Lenoir-Rhyne. He averaged nearly one goal per game with an average of 0.86 to rank 14th in the nation. de Goya tallied 27 total points during the 2017 season to rank 3rd in the conference. A two-time Astroturf South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, he recorded multi-goal games twice on the year as well as a hat trick at Catawba on Oct. 11.
Ditommaso a freshman from Milan, Italy, finished the regular season with four goals and three assists despite missing the first three games of the season. Ditommaso scored a goal against Bob Jones in his collegiate debut. He scored again in his second game in the victory over Queens, while notching an assist in the Anderson victory. Ditommaso netted the game-winner at Newberry, while collecting a goal and an assist in the Carson-Newman win. He registered an assist in the SAC Tournament victory over Newberry.
Hamill earns his ninth South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honor after guiding the Bulldogs to their fourth-straight South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Regular Season Championship. The title marked Wingate's eighth SAC Championship overall. Wingate finished the regular season atop the SAC standings with an overall record of 11-4-1, including an 8-1-1 mark in South Atlantic Conference action. Wingate finished the season with 37 goals to lead the SAC as only 15 goals got past the defense.
Danilo da Silva of Lincoln Memorial, and Tobias Solem Karlsen of Carson-Newman and Edmundo Robinson of Queens joined de Goya on the list of first-team forwards. Carson-Newman's Tom Read, Wingate's Felipe Checco, and Lenoir-Rhyne's Florian Simon and Victor Cascon were tabbed first team midfielders.
On the defensive side, Damian Gaona of Wingate, Lenoir-Rhyne's Sercan Cihan, Queen's Michael Hornsby, and Carson-Newman's Samuel Jenkins were tabbed first-team defenders. Pablo Jara from Wingate took home first-team goalkeeper honors.
