Leandro, a senior from Aljaraque, Spain, is ranked No. 16 nationally by Golfstat and was a Second Team All-American last season after finishing 10th in the stroke play portion of the 2017 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships. He has finished in the top 10 in six of Newberry's eight tournaments this season. He was the individual medalist at the season-opening UNG Fall Invitational and at the Bash at the Beach. He shot rounds of 75 and 71 to win the Tennessee River Rumble in the final tournament of the regular season and also finished tied for fifth at the Bearcat Classic with rounds of 70, 73 and 69. He shot a career-low 66 in the opening round of the Miami Intercollegiate, while also recording a round of 67 to open the Kickoff Classic.
Howard Vroon, the reigning Golf Pride Grips Southeast Region Coach of the Year, has led Newberry to arguably its most successful run in school history. The Wolves have been ranked as high as No. 3 in the Golfstat rankings this season and are currently slotted eighth. In the Bushnell Division II Coaches Poll, Newberry is currently ranked fourth, a school record. The Wolves have won five tournaments this year, and have not finished below fifth in their other three events. Under Vroon's guidance, the Wolves' golfers have compiled 20 individual top-10 finishes, 10 top-fives, two tournament wins and have played 37 percent (46 of 126) of their rounds at or below par this season.
